Migrating legacy manufacturing systems to the cloud

The challenge

Ageing on-premise systems in facilities across three continents, with inconsistent uptime and a hardware refresh bill that had become impossible to defend.

What we did

• Assessed every workload individually — and recommended that several stay on-premise, where latency to plant equipment made cloud a bad fit
• Replatformed the rest, moving to managed databases and queues to reduce operational load
• Terraformed everything; no environment was created by hand
• Instituted FinOps tagging and budgets from day one, not after the first shocking invoice

Outcome

• Materially improved uptime on migrated workloads
• Significant reduction in infrastructure run cost
• Environments reproducible from code, so disaster recovery stopped being theoretical
