Migrating legacy manufacturing systems to the cloud
Global manufacturing corporation
The challenge
Ageing on-premise systems in facilities across three continents, with inconsistent uptime and a hardware refresh bill that had become impossible to defend.
What we did
- Assessed every workload individually — and recommended that several stay on-premise, where latency to plant equipment made cloud a bad fit
- Replatformed the rest, moving to managed databases and queues to reduce operational load
- Terraformed everything; no environment was created by hand
- Instituted FinOps tagging and budgets from day one, not after the first shocking invoice
Outcome
- Materially improved uptime on migrated workloads
- Significant reduction in infrastructure run cost
- Environments reproducible from code, so disaster recovery stopped being theoretical
“They talked us out of migrating two systems. No vendor had ever done that before.”— Global manufacturing corporation
